FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 19, 2025
Fort Worth, TX – On the morning of June 19, 2025, in front of a proud and reverent crowd gathered at the Fort Worth Juneteenth Freedom Fest, President Kerensa Nero of the Fort Worth (TX) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, stood with dignity and purpose to deliver the official Juneteenth Resolution on behalf of both the Western Area and the Fort Worth Chapter.
The resolution, crafted in honor and observance of Juneteenth, commemorated the day in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It affirmed Juneteenth as a sacred national milestone of liberty, resilience, and justice.
In her address, President Nero paid tribute to the long road toward freedom marked by landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act of 2021. She also honored Ms. Opal Lee, a Fort Worth native and beloved national icon, whose relentless advocacy earned her the title “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 2022, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024.
“As members of The Links, Incorporated, we are committed to not only remembering this historic day but activating its legacy through service, education, and action,” said President Nero.
In alignment with this commitment, the Fort Worth Chapter presented a gift of $500 to Unity Unlimited, supporting its mission to preserve and promote Juneteenth history and education. The Chapter also renewed its call to incorporate the teaching of Juneteenth into school curriculums nationwide and to ensure that books capturing this history are available in all libraries, including the Library of Congress.
The Links, Incorporated—an international, nonprofit organization of nearly 18,000 accomplished African American women—has been at the forefront of civic, educational, and cultural engagement for more than 75 years. The Fort Worth (TX) Chapter continues to lead through impactful programs that uplift, educate, and inspire.
The Juneteenth Resolution closed with a powerful call to honor the strength and resilience of our ancestors, acknowledge the progress that has been made, and remain steadfast in the pursuit of justice, equity, and Black excellence.
